Teaching the alphabet -more ideas

Recognition of the letters of the alphabet is one of the key predictors of reading success. Children have to learn to recognize and attach sound to four sets of letters—uppercase print, lowercase print,

It takes time and practice to distinguish one from the other in each pair. These are some ideas:

Upper or lower?

Print one set of upper case letters and one set of lowercase lettersfont. Repeat for many sets of upper and lowercase letters as you want.

Cut apart all of the letters.

Laminate all pieces.

Store each set of letters in a separate bag/container. Ask the childrento sort letters for upper/ lower, for colour, shape, type, etc

Abcorder

Alphabet line-up

Give each child an alphabet flashcard. Play analphabet song and have the children walk around in a circle singing along tothe song. Stop the music and ask the children to line up in the correctalphabetical order according to their cards.

Musical letters

Place the chairs in a circle, and place a letter witha different coloured marker next to each chair. While the music plays, childrenmarch around the circle holding a paper. When the music stops, they must find achair, take the letter and marker and write that letter on their paper.

Letter/sound match

If you have pocket charts, prepare some strips with the letters of thealphabet and clipart to match them. For example A and apple.

Letter formation poems

When writing letters, it is important that children learn to go in the correct direction (from top to bottom).
These are some poems to recite with your children while learning to write the letters of the alphabet.

a--First make a round apple toeat; then a slide for an ant when he’s finished his treat-

b--Draw a straight back just like me. Don’t forget to add a belly for b.

c--Cars can cruise down curvy c. Stopnear the ground--that’s it you see.

d--First you make a dime to spend. Goway up high, then down to the end.

e--A little line starts off e. Add aplate for an egg--here’s breakfast for me!

f--This flower grows tall and hangs alittle. Add a line right in the middle.

g--A garden starts with a littleseed. The roots grown down. That’s all you need.

h--First start high, then take a jump. Little h has a little hump.

i--Little i goes down; it’s an ice creamtreat. Add a sprinkle on top and it’s ready to eat.

j--Little j is so thin and lean. Jumpway down; then add a jellybean!

k--K and k have three lines as you can see:a tall straight back and a sideways v.

l--Little l looks like a number one. Justdraw a line and you are done!

m--Go down, hit the ground; then get readyfor bumps. Little m is easy to write; just add two humps.

n--Go down, hit the ground and you’realmost done. Little m has two humps; n has only one!

o--Oh yum! An orange to eat! Niceand round; it’s a healthy treat.

p--Pop on down and then up you see. Finishit off with a little pea!

q--A fancy queen with a little pearl. Give q’s hair a special curl.

r--Go straight down; then race onback. r has an arm, like a little rack.

s--Silly S and s, those slipperysnakes. Twisty, turny, ready to shake!

t--Little t is a little tree. Add afort in the middle for you and me.

u--Curve down and up; then down oncemore. Little u is a cup that’s ready to pour.

v--Slant down first, then up like so. This upside down volcano is ready to blow!

w--W and w have two pointy waves. Swimin the water if you’re brave!

x--A criss and a cross and in case youforget, where is the treasure? x marks the spot!

y--Slant down right, down to theground. Slant down left and take it underground.

z--Zigzag Z and z are easy, you see. Justzig a zag-1, 2, 3!

Teaching the Alphabet

Alphabet recognition is the ability to readthe letters of the alphabet when presented with them in random order.

Children don’t know the alphabet simplybecause they can sing the ABC song or recite the alphabet, or because they canpoint to the letters in order.

Doing those things indicates children havesome background knowledge about the alphabet, but it certainly doesn't meanchildren know the alphabet.

As teachers, we need to be able to explain thedifference to parents. We also need to have many different tools available tous for teaching about the alphabet.

Learning outcomes:

These are some possible learning outcomes to work on the alphabet

· associate letters to sounds

· differentiate letters from words

· form smallwords with different letter fonts

· learning each other's names

· makedistinctions between letters and words

· practise letter formation

· make lettersound associations as they use pointers to read ABC strips

· makeattempts to 'track' the print and make one to one correspondence

· matchletters to pictures of objects that begin with that letter/sound

· do left to right progression

· match twopictures that begin with the same consonant letter/sound

· match uppercase and lower case letters

· place letters in alphabetical order

· practice ABCorder as they arrange letters in ABC order, identify missing letters, andconnect the dots from A to Z

· recognize that print has meaning

· recognizeupper and lower case letters

· sort lettersby colour, upper and lower case

· sing, chant,rhyme, walk the alphabet

On March 2nd we celebrate Dr. Seuss day.

This is a wonderful site to read, watch and listen some of the wonderful Dr. Seuss stories

In honor to Dr Seuss I decided to celebrate March by reading. These are some ideas for the Book orLibrary centre.

The Book centreor the Library centre
Reading is a wonderful skill to be developed at school and home. Settinga book centre or a library centre is a great idea to promote the love forreading.
Get your librarian degree at one of these online schools. The book centre allows children listen to, read, and write stories.

This is a quiet place where children can look at books, view filmstrips,listen to a variety of taped resources and write (emergent type) stories oftheir own.

Books and stories areoften shared with classmates. This area should be carpeted, attractive and neara window.
Prepare soft chairsand cushions and a small table. Decorate the walls with posters, photos of yourclass reading, pictures of some of the authors…
It is ideal to locatethe centre near a window so that children have natural light. If not, an extralamp will provide additional lighting.
You can also add aflannel or magnetic board, pocket charts and puppets and a stage.

*Toorganize your books you can label them. Some label titles can be:
Picture books
Fantasy / Folk books
Animals / Plants /Nature books
Science books
Math / Counting books
Season books
Celebration books
I know that Office Depot has labels that making organizing fun!

Possible outcomes for this centre:
1. Developing conceptsof print
2. Pretending/reallyreading
3. Enjoying “picturereading”

Shape Cats
Provide shapes from construction paper for children to create a cat.

Cats
Discuss and explore the care of cats and how they behave. Use articles, the internet, and Patches (our cat) to learn all about felines.

Cats' collages

Make collages by cutting out pictures of cats out of magazines.

Cat hat

Make your own Cat-In-The-Hat hat or a cat ear headband. Cut a circle out of a black pice of paper about the size of a paper plate. Staring on the outside edge, cut one large spiral piece about 3 cms thick.

Songs, Poems, Fingerplays

Cat in the Hat Fingerplay

One little cat on a sunny day
Put on his hat and went out to play
Two little cats when it started getting dark
Put on their hats and went to the park.

After 20 years of teaching children I found that the only way our children love learning is if we love learning and teaching, too. Promoting a learning environment where laugh, fun and friendship and companionship are as important as any language structure, are the things I had in mind while designed my resources.

I am Christian and follow Jesus since I was a child. I teach about Jesus to the little ones in my church and also train people to become Sunday School teachers in my district. This pic is from my last Summer Camp for teachers at church. We had a fantastic time and of course, donuts and cappuchinos were the best way to "recharge" our batteries.

It is said that a teacher affects eternity because you can never tell where the influence stops.

I feel so blessed to do what I love, teaching.

Brush your teeth blends

I added a small tag for kids to find them easier in the bookshelf

Mat and cards for them to build words. I added a set of cards in upper and lower case letters.

This is one of my favourite chants to teach my kids to brush their teeth:

Brushing my teeth

Up and down and round and round

I brush my teeth to keep them bright and clean;

To keep them bright and clean

I brush them morning,

I brush them at noon

I brush them after eating pie

I brush them at night.

You can use the chant to practice sound "br" . How many times did you hear the sound "br"?

Can you stomp your feet whenever you hear "br"? Can you pretend you are brushing your teeth whenever you hear "br"?

Blends or clusters

What is a cluster or blend?

A consonant cluster (sometimes known as a consonant blend) is a group of consonants that appear together in a word without any vowels between them.

When reading clusters, each letter within the cluster is pronounced individually.

Blends can be at the beginning of the word, in the middle or at the end.

Here you have some general ideas to teach blends with your children:

Name as many things that begins with.... (use the blend you are teaching or reviewing)
Say a word that rhymes with....
Does ......sound like ........?
Where is the sound.....in this word?
List words that ends with ....
Go on a .....sound hunt .
Can you name an animal that begins/ ends with .....?
Can you draw a fruit that begins / ends with ....?
Play "I spy a word that begins with..."
Make riddles using the blend you want to introduce or practise.
Write silly sentences beginning with that blend.

These are some "teeth" I made for the dental center. I got some plastic bottles, cut them and painted with white paint. I made teeth for different sizes so kids could sort them by size, too.

What can you do with these cards? These are some ideas:

Babies and children learn about life by connecting with the world aroundthem through the senses they have available.

They see, hear, smell, taste and touch the world around them.

They discover dogs bark and cats meow by listening to the noises theymake, identifying them in the brain and labeling them first.

They can tell an apple from an orange not only by looking at them butalso by smelling them, holding them and tasting them.

They differentiate hot and cold things by touching and looking at themand sorting them in their brains first.

The senses are their most familiar, most basicway to explore, process, and come to understand new information and store it intheir brains.

The question is, then, why don’t we make use of all these channels whenwe learn a new language?

I believe we can smell, taste, touch, hear and see language and I try tooffer my little kids lots of opportunities to use their multisensory abilities.

That way I don’t narrow my children’s learning possibilities.

Multisensory teaching is making use of the visual, auditory,kinesthetic, tactile, smell and taste channels simultaneously taking intoaccount our children’s learning styles.

That’s why must allow young children tolearn through experience, not just lecture.Children need to usetheir senses and be engaged in meaningful experiences. Aswe talk with them about what they are observing and sensing, we give them newlanguage tools to connect with these more familiar sensory tools, buildinglanguage as well as supporting cognitive concepts specific to theexperience.

While children learn through their senses, theyalso are developing the ability to use those senses and are building theneurological pathways associated with each one.

Multisensory activities are extremely useful when teaching a secondlanguage because the active use of the senses gives the brain memories to hangonto.

This is the way we acquire our first language. Why don´t using the samestrategies when teaching a new language?

We learn our mother tongue by listening, touching, smelling, tasting andlooking at things and making connections about those things and our previousknowledge about them.

In the past, language too often just meant text,and increasingly learners are finding text difficult and de-motivating. We needto accommodate different learning styles; not everyone learns best in the sameway.

Research tells us that just telling someonesomething is not the most efficient way of getting them to learn it.

Besides learners need lots of practice inmanipulating the elements of the language (consolidation) before attempting touse the language to speak, listen, read or write. When teaching a new vocabulary set or a newgrammar structure consider the five senses we use to relate the world aroundus.

Let children see, taste, smell, hear, and touch the new words (whenpossible).

Using the 5 senses provides our childrena 'peg' to hang language on and as an aid to memory and recall.

What materials can you use for the senses?

Senseof Sight : text, pictures, graphics, realia, books,posters, videos, technology, puppets,flannel board and pocket charts, word walls, etc.

Senseof Hearing: listening to teacher and others, torecordings, videos, music, talking,shouting, whispering, saying rhymes, singing, sounds around us, story-telling,clapping, chanting, fingerplays, etc.

Senseof Touch: different textures, mystery boxes orbags, handlingobjects, making

things,describing shapes, body language, games involving manipulating objects, toys,etc.

Senseof Taste and Smell: tasting food and drink, smelling different scents,fragrances, guessing food by smelling and tasting it, etc

If you are teaching animals in the pond you can use flashcards or real pictures of theanimals, record animals making sounds and get kids listen and identify theanimals, get the children to move like animals.

Or if you are teaching fruits you can use realia or posters, letchildren manipulate fruits, smell them and of course, eat them!.

Multisensory strategies stimulate children by engaging them at differentlevels and enabling them to use their personal strengths to help them learn inthe different learning styles.

Vocabulary wordmats contains a selection of vocabulary organised into catergories, suitablefor little children but you can use them with older children, too.

Mats are ready tobe printed and laminated and given to individual kids to support andencourage the use of new vocabulary.

What can you dowith vocabulary mats?

Play Hangman.Choose a word from the mat. Don’t tell anybody. Write the beginning and endingletter in the Hangman mat. Ask your friends to guess!

Build the wordsusing letter tiles.

Use the words towrite sentences or stories.

Write the wordsin alphabetical order by the first letter, second letter, etc.

Children taketurns giving 'who am I' clues for a chosen word.

Sort the words bynumber of consonants/ vowels.

Find words thatbegin with (specify a letter).

Sort words bynumber of syllables.

Find words thatend with (specify a letter).

Find rhymingwords.
